National Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Last year there were more than 3,900 cases of child maltreatment in the tri-county area. With the coronavirus pandemic, children are out of school, forcing many families to choose between work and childcare. For many, incomes are gone; bills are piling up. HIgh, sustained levels of stress can lead to a surge in child neglect and abuse. Windwood staff will be working around the clock to serve children and families that need us during the coronavirus pandemic. Our long time business partner, Lennar Builders, will match your funds up to $7,500! Text BLUE2020 to 41444 to Be a Champion for a Child today!

The health and safety of our community is our top priority; we will continue taking steps to protect the many people we contact every week. In response to the state of emergency declared by Governor McMaster, Windwood Family Services is taking steps to help prevent the spread of COVID-19/Coronavirus. We are in touch with state and city officials and are continually updating measures to protect our Windwood residents and community based services clients. Under our current virus protocol, everyone who enters a Windwood building is required to sign in and is asked about recent travel, whether they are experiencing flu-like symptoms, and whether anyone in their household has been quarantined. People who answer yes to any of these questions will be asked to leave as a precaution. How has Windwood Family Services handled school closing? Windwood staff will provide academic instruction and enrichment to the boys residing on our campus while Charleston County School [...]

Adverse Childhood Experiences

Adverse Childhood Experiences South Carolina’s Adverse Childhood Experiences Initiative Empowering communities to prevent childhood adversity Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events that occur in a child’s life prior to the age of 18. This adversity can harm a child’s brain and its development, which can result in long-term negative health and social outcomes. ACEs include emotional, physical and sexual abuse; domestic violence; substance use and mental illness of someone in the household; being separated from parents, including incarceration and divorce; food insecurity; and homelessness. Through the empowerment of communities, the South Carolina ACE Initiative helps children and families overcome the effects of traumatic experiences, prevent poor health outcomes and promote well-being later in life. Children’s Trust is training to increase awareness of ACEs and their impact, collecting and disseminating data, building a prevention planning framework, and promoting sound legislative policy to address ACEs in our communities. Around lunchtime on a hot Wednesday late last month, Walter Nolan-Cohn took a break from the sun and chowed down on a chili dog. The lunch buddy beside him was one of 25 boys who live at Windwood Farm Home for Children in Awendaw, some 22 miles from Riley Park in downtown Charleston where Nolan-Cohn works. “We got to really talk to them and give them positive words of encouragement,” said Nolan-Cohn, the Community Relations Director for the Charleston RiverDogs baseball team. Lunch wasn’t the only reason he and several other RiverDogs staffers made the trip out to Windwood. The group partnered with Blackbaud and renovated Windwood’s baseball field. In one day, more than 30 members of the baseball team’s staff and a handful of Blackbaud employees cut the overrun grass, added new bases and reshaped the baseball diamond to bring it up to date. “It was essentially a backstop with high grass and [...]
