How to Help a Child in Foster Care this Christmas The holiday season; a time for joy, a time for happiness.  Christmas, Hanukkah, New Years, Kwanzaa; a time of giving and of family.  It is a time of wonder and excitement for  millions of children across the nation, and across the globe.  It is a time when memories are made, and love is shared. Yet, for so many children in the foster care system, it is anything but a time of joy, a time of excitement.  Indeed, it is just the opposite.   ‘Tis the season?  Not for the roughly half a million children in foster care in the United States.   It is often a time of great sadness and despair.  For these children, it is a reminder of so much anxiety and trauma in their young lives.  Many foster children are faced with the realization that they will not be “home for the holidays,” [...]

The value of immunizations for infants can’t be overstated

2017-12-04T19:35:19+00:00April 25th, 2017|Categories: Homepage Featured Post, News|

Immunizations save lives. There is no denying it: Vaccines have drastically reduced infant death and disability caused by preventable diseases. Just consider some of the milestones shared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Through immunization, we can now protect infants and children from 14 vaccine-preventable diseases before age 2. In the 1950s, nearly every child developed measles and, unfortunately, some even died from this serious disease. Many physicians today have never seen a case of the measles. Among children born during 1994-2013, vaccination will prevent an estimated 322 million illnesses, 21 million hospitalizations and 732,000 deaths over the course of their lifetimes. It also saves about $13.5 billion in direct costs. The National Immunization Survey has consistently shown that childhood immunization rates for vaccines routinely recommended for children remain at or near record levels. The importance of immunizations Immunizations play a valuable role in protecting the health of not only our children, [...]

Hungry Children in Rich America Today, Children’s Defense Fund-Ohio released a new report with an urgent call to action on Early Childhood Hunger. There is no excuse for any child to go hungry in our country, and this brief, The Early Childhood Hunger Imperative finds thousands of Ohio’s youngest children are being stunted by hunger every day. Can you imagine your 6-year-old digging through the trash at school to find food for his 3-year-old younger sister? That is exactly what CDF-Ohio discovered and unfortunately there are numerous children just like them. Please read and share this important new report and demand that political leaders at all levels do something about it. Here are a few of the key findings from the brief. Food Insecurity in young children increases the odds of negative health outcomes: Nearly two times more likely to be in “fair or poor health;” Two times as likely to have behavioral problems; [...]
