A Reflection on 40 Years

“In the very early days of Windwood, when we opened our first house in 1985 we had six boys. Back in 1985. I would get emotional and I still get emotional as I would hear the stories of the deprivation and abuse and neglect that these children have suffered through no fault of their own. And that continues to this day. That showed me that I had found God’s plan for me and God’s plan for Windwood. I’m very proud of what we’ve done at Windwood. As I look around the property and internally at the programs we have, it’s hard for me to believe I was 33 years old when I bought this property and started my Windwood journey, but I know, because of the wonderful staff that we’ve had over the many years and the wonderful work they’ve done, I know we’ve saved lives. And I know that as we reached out into the community with our community based programs, we’ve impacted thousands of families and children – and it’s difficult to quantify – the benefits that Windwood has provided to the community but, I know that the benefits have been immeasurable.”

AT THE FARM

A Brighter Future Begins Here

You Gave Generously and Made a Difference

By the time Owen went into protective custody, he was 12 years old and had already moved more times than some most people do in a lifetime, while experiencing homelessness, and witnessing domestic abuse.

Soon after Owen arrived at Windwood Farm Home for Children, he began to believe that this might be a better place.

As he progressed in his therapy, Owen learned new ways to communicate and process his feelings. The care he received, combined with attending school on campus, living alongside other boys facing similar challenges, and taking part in enrichment activities like basketball, fishing, art, and community outings, helped him learn and grow.

His mother remained committed and involved in his treatment plan. She and Owen looked forward to weekly sessions with his Windwood therapist. They both strived to complete their program goals. As a result, Owen and his mom are now living together successfully using the skills they learned at Windwood as they build a brighter future together.

IN THE COMMUNITY

We helped this family.

Our Family Resource Connection and Preservation Services helped a mom undergoing cancer treatment.

We recently worked with a family led by single mother Deborah Caldwell who is courageously battling cancer while caring for her young son, Benjamin. Deborah had been struggling to meet their basic needs and was in urgent need of support.

Misty, one of our dedicated caseworkers, quickly identified several areas where Windwood could help stabilize and strengthen the household. Our team provided essential furnishings for the living room, along with beds and clean bedding. Misty also offered guidance on home maintenance and how to locate community resources online. To help build independent living skills, we supplied cleaning materials and demonstrated simple, effective housekeeping practices. During the holiday season, Windwood added Benjamin to our community donor and volunteer wish list. Deborah was overjoyed when her son received a brand-new bicycle and helmet — something she had long wished for but could not afford. This support has helped Deborah and Benjamin sustain a safe, clean, and nurturing home environment while gaining the confidence to seek out long-term community resources for ongoing stability.
